Recession Continues to Batter State Budgets

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) updated its state fiscal report on December 18th projecting budget gaps for this year and next year combined for a total of more than $350 billion. Although the ARRA fiscal relief to states mitigated states’ fiscal problems—closing state-shortfalls by 30-40%--states are continuing to cut services like education and health care as they implement 2010 budgets. Additional cuts are likely for 2011.was enough to close 30-40% of state shortfalls. More than 30 states have raised taxes and several are considering similar measures.
