States Turn to Tax and Fee Hikes To Close Budget Gaps
As budget deficits grow to more than $200 billion, states are turning to tax and fee hikes even as federal recovery funds flow to states. More than a dozen states have raised taxes or are considering doing so. States are hoping that increased sales and income taxes, higher fees for a variety of services and the more than $40 billion in cuts already enacted will help close state budget gaps.
